About Suzan Heideman
Seeing the world differently
I have always been drawn to the details that can easily go unnoticed — the texture of an animal’s fur, an unusual shape in nature, the way light falls across a surface, or the possibility hidden within an unexpected form. My artwork begins with these observations, but I like to take them somewhere less predictable.
Color is at the heart of my work.
I love working with a wide and sometimes unexpected range of colors, finding harmony between shades and combinations that create energy, warmth and atmosphere. I want my artwork to feel vibrant and uplifting — something that brings a little sense of joy to the viewer.
I work primarily with Caran d’Ache Neocolor wax pastels combined with colored pencils, building my images layer by layer. I enjoy the contrast between the expressive quality of the wax pastels and the precision of colored pencils, allowing me to explore color, texture, depth and detail.
I was diagnosed as autistic later in life. This helped me understand why I have always experienced the visual world in such an intense and individual way. I naturally notice patterns, colors, textures and small details, and often see connections and possibilities that might otherwise be overlooked. This different way of seeing has become an important part of my artistic perspective.
Nature and animals are a constant source of inspiration because they offer endless possibilities. A familiar subject can become something unexpected when viewed differently. I want my artwork to create that same feeling of discovery for the viewer — something that catches your eye, makes you pause, and perhaps reveals something new the longer you look.
